Menu Week 2

Our planned meals last week actually worked out great!  My planning really paid off.  So, this week I am trying it again.  Although, today we already didn't follow through, but it was a "holiday" so I guess that excuses us.  Also, Caleb breaking the garage window added some time to clean up and shopping that we weren't expecting to do.

Here is this week's menu.

Sunday: Lasagna (supposed to be)
Monday: Breakfast Casserole
Tuesday: Tacos
Wednesday: Mini Pizzas
Thursday: Canned soup (maybe lasagna now)
Friday: Steak, Rice, Green Beans

Tha plan is there.  Now all we need is the follow through!

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!

All I can say is the look on his face says it all!  :0)  "Oh, shit!"

Nite Eye's 2010

We went Trick or Treating at the zoo tonight with the neighbors.  We met up at Burger King for supper and then went on down to the zoo.  Carter was Mario and Caleb was Luigi.  Their friend Nolan was Buzz Lightyear and Morgan was supposed to be a kitty.

Carter and Caleb had Halloween parties this morning at daycare.  When Chris dressed Carter in his Mario outfit (which is regular clothes) he kept crying wanting Mario off!  haha!

Our Little Mario!  :0)  Too stinkin' cute!
Boys at the start of Nite Eye's.  Caleb was already tired of the crowds and waiting!

This is the way I found him after nap the other day.  He had put his arm through his neck hole!  Silly Nut!

Getting bored "cheesing" for mommy!  What a cutie!

Carter digging right into the pumpkin!

More guts!

Caleb starting his pumpkin.  Carter is ready to step in!

Caleb getting squimish!

Carter helping out!

Caleb holding the goo- but only for a second and only after we MADE him!! haha!

Carter with his final product.

Caleb with his final product!  He barely sat long enough for me to get this picture let alone try to get another one with his eyes open!

My little Mario and Luigi!  Obviously Carter's costume is a little homemade.  When we go out for trick or treating we will draw mustaches on them.  :0)

Menu

Each week I write a "menu" for the week.  So when I grocery shop I have those ingredients on hand to make a least a handful of meals.  Well.  It hasn't been working lately.  We don't follow the menu very well and it seems to be the same things each week.  A few of my friends have been saying that they make a monthly calendar.  I thought that was a little extreme at first, but I realized that it would mean a lot less boredom... So I sat down and wrote a monthly menu.  Each week I tried to include a soup, a pasta, mexican, chinese, and then a beef.  (We have a ton of beef)  My goal was to not include too many foods that needed a recipe or that would take a long time to prep and cook.  I am still going to shop one week at a time, but this way I am not eating the same things each week.  My goal from this is to actaully be organized and cook these meals each night.  Otherwise we don't eat homecooked meals- we fall back on ordering pizza or eating cereal.  I also allow myself to switch meals around within the week.  So, when I have night meetings, or we have plans in the evening we can substitute easier meals.

This is what we have planned for this week:
Sunday- Chicken Enchiladas, Lettuce
Monday- Chili, corn
Tuesday- Spaghetti and Meatballs, salad
Wednesday- Pot Roast
Thursday- Chicken, Rice and Broccoli
Friday- Out with neighbors
Saturday- Cheeseburgers, Sweet Pot. Fries

I even went as far to put this in my google calendar and planned out what prep I needed to do!  Sad I know!  But, hopefully knowing that I need to make the meatballs for tomorrow night this morning, because I won't be home tonight and we have a playdate tomorrow morning, will get the meatballs done so we can eat them!!  :0)  Over kill, but hopefully it works.

Weekend

We had a nice relaxing weekend.  For once.  We started off by going grocery shopping Saturday morning and out to eat for lunch at Caleb's favorite restaurant.  You got it- Pizza Ranch.  We are getting pretty burned out, but the kids eat really well there since there is a decent variety of food.  After lunch we came home to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes play.  Caleb was pretty excited about the game.  Rooting them on and asking about the score every couple minutes.  He was pretty upset they lost...  He cracked me up when he asked why daddy was crabby!!  haha!  After the game we played outside for awhile.  Our neighbor Joe was outside, so of course the boys were over there chatting with him!  They LOVE Joe.  Especially Carter...  It is funny to hear him yell clear across the yard "Hi Joe!!".  haha!  We went on a long family walk after supper, then put the kids to bed.

Sunday was nice as well.  We got up early (not voluntarily) and ended up going to my work to till the garden.  That took a couple hours and when we got home we fed the kids and took naps.  Well, Carter and I did while the boys watched the Bears play.  Another not so good game.  After the game was over we went outside to carve our pumpkins!  Carter and I made a cute winking face and Caleb and Chris made a Hawkeye symbol.  They are pretty neat!  Carter dug right into his pumpkin and was digging out the guts like a champ until Caleb came over and said "Eww."  Grrr.  Oh well we got them cleaned and carved.  I will post pictures later.  After pumpkin carving we got cleaned up and went uptown to the Spooktacular.  They had some fun games, crafts, and snacks for the kids.  We went later, so a lot of it was dying down.  But, it got the kids out of the house and we saw some friends.  Then it was supper and off to bed.  :0)

Full Moon

Caleb was beyond crazy this weekend.  Pushing our buttons left and right.  I don't know if Mommy was particularly crabby or if it was him, but I was ready for the weekend to be over.  I can't even think of specific things that he was doing- but oh jeez!  When I dropped him off at preschool I gave them a heads up to be on top of him since he was crazy all weekend and they reminded me it was a full moon on Saturday.  I don't know if these theories are actually "proven", but my goodness I hope that the full moon was the cause of my stress!!  I also hope that the full moon NEVER visits again!!

Potty

Carter has been all about the potty lately.  A couple months ago I checked out the Elmo Potty movie from the library and made Carter sit on his potty chair to watch the movie.  Since then he has been all about sitting on the potty.  Carrying it from the bathroom to the living room, etc.  The potty chair we had for Caleb is the one type with the lid that is also a stool, but the soft cushy seat has a "weinie holder" and Carter HATES it!  He does not like to have his weinie shoved underneath the splash guard.  So today we bought him his own Froggy potty that he straddles, so he doesn't have a splash guard to deal with.  He was very excited!  Right away when we got home he wanted his pants off to sit on it and he actually peed in it a little.  But he got so startled that he was actually peeing in the potty that he stood up and ran around the room.  So, my carpet was showered on as well!  haha!  I think he will do pretty well with potty training.   This is really early for him to be interested in the potty.  I am very happy about that!  Everytime he sits on the potty, though, he wants to watch "Melmo!"  haha!

Girl's "Night" Out

I had a girls night out yesterday.  There were 6 of us and we went to Creative Treasures in Ankeny.  It took me a little while to figure out what I wanted to create.  Everything was pretty expensive, plus when I would want something I couldn't see the practicality in the piece.  What was I going to do with it?? So I ended up going "cheap" and easy.  I found a 6" x 6" square that had 2 holes in the top.  I painted Caleb's name on it and a soccer ball, baseball and football.  I was planning on doing Caleb's name in Red with a Blue background, but when I outlined his name in blue to prep for the rest of the background I liked the outline, so I painted the rest of the background yellow.  I hope it will turn out nice after it is fired.  I need to go back!!  I want to make a wall hanging for Carter, too.  Then when we were finishing up, I saw a great idea to do house numbers on small squares.  Very interested in going back!

After we painted we went out to eat at Yanni's.  I went there at the end of the summer and it was good this time again, too!  I got gnoochi again!  Yum!!  I tried their homemade pasta and I think I will try that again sometime.  They have a buffet, so I would really like to eat there for that so I can try more things!!

After girls night out we had our end of the season softball celebration.  The whole team was invited, but only 4 team members ended up coming.  Which is totally okay.  It was a nice relaxing evening.

Today we went to Ames to do a little shopping and returning.  We went to Theisens and I found a pair of coveralls for winter!  The first pair I tried on were pink!  haha!  Chris said they were a little much, so I ended up getting a dark brown pair.  So once I find a pair of snowboots I will be set for winter!  Watch it not snow this winter.  I guess if it takes me being ready for the weather for it to not snow I will invest in that every year!  I actually had 35% off today at Penney's and I wasn't able to partake in the sales more.  I don't need anything.  Darn it.

Halloween!

I was talking to one of my kiddos at work the other day trying to figure out what Caleb and Carter should be for Hallween and he had the great idea of them dressing up as Mario and Luigi!  I thought that was a great idea and as much as Caleb loves Mario I thougth he would like it too.  We ended up finding a Luigi costume at Wal-Mart for Caleb, but were unable to find Mario for Carter.  So, I think we will just try to create one the best we can.  Should be pretty easy.  I just need to try to find a red hat.

My kiddos at work thought it would be funny if I dressed up as Princess Peach and Chris as Bowser!  haha!  I did find a Princess Peach costume, but it was for kids.  Online I found a Yoshi costume for Chris!  haha!  But it was $30.  Too much.  Oh well, I guess we will leave it for the kids!

Busy.

It seems like we have so much to do, but never have the time to do it.  We finally got groceries this week.  Squeezed in a couple minutes then to find costumes for the boys.  We need to go to JCPenneys to return some things, I need to find a winter coat, we need to shop for a washer/dryer, I would like to do a family trip to the pumpkin patch...  There is just no time!  Hopefully things will calm down soon and we can accomplish something!

New Perspective

I have been feeling really "disatisfied" with life lately.  A little envious of people with bigger and better things, house, cars, etc.  I know that I have a nice house and a nice car.  I have a great family.  I am (trying) to look better everyday.  I shouldn't be disatisfied with anything.  So, I am trying to adopt a new perspective on life.  I don't have to keep up with the Jones' to be happy.  I need to do what I need to be happy.

I am not entirely sure what will help to make my perspective different.  As much as I want it to be different it is hard to change wanting to keep up... but, I will keep trying.

I did have a little bit of an eye opener today.  We toured another branch of my organization today.  The branch we toured was IHYC- Iowa Homeless Youth Center.  The first place we went was the Outreach center.  We were told about a boy- Reggie Kelsey, whom "Reggie's Sleep-out" is named for, and his story of aging out of the system and becoming homeless which led to his being fished from the river.

From there we toured the Lighthouse which is a home for 16-21 year old mothers.  While at this house 6 women can be educated and learn life skills to help them function in a permanent home and in safe relationships.  They are allowed to stay in this home for up to 2 years.  They also can have 2 children live there with them as long as they are under 5 years old.  When we toured this home (which is a former convent) we got to see one of the girls' rooms.  There was a twin bed, dresser, sink and closet.  In this particular room there was also a toddler bed and a potty chair for the 2 year old she had.  This room was smaller than my dorm room in college.  It was really only made ofr a twin bed and a dresser at most.  To think that some of these girls have a crib, toddler bed or two in there with them is crazy!  The rooms were all pretty small and cramped.  Even the common rooms where the children could play and the girls could relax and watch tv were small.  Even small for a regular sized family let alone 6!

Then next house we visited was Buchanan.  This house is where young men and women who were homeless could live.  They could get education, life skills and employment help.  The purpose of this house is to simulate living on their own.  Any income they receive is budgeted and 60% of it is taken, so they realize what it is like to pay bills.  They get the money back when they leave the center.  The rooms there are tiny, too.

We then met with a man named Howard Crow Eagle.  He took us to the river where we got to see where homeless camps are.  He took us down to meet a man who built his "shanti" from pallets and tarps.  He had a very neat and tidy camp.  There was a rake and several shovels.  You could tell he had just raked the area around his shanti right before we got there.  He had done a walk for homeless and walked 88.5 miles!  He is very motivated, clean and helpful.  He spoke to us about why he was homeless and what he does to help toher homeless out.  He helps build camps for others, etc.  Sidenote- he has a facebook account!!  After that we went to Central Iowa Shelter Services.  This is a homeless shelter for central Iowa.  They have 68 beds for men, 34 for women, and 14 for veterans.  We were able to look into the men's room sice during the day they have to be gone.  There were 68 beds in a room no larger than a regular classroom.  They were all bunkbeds and each bed was full.  The beds were all made and underneath each blanket was the persons entire life.  All of their possessions fit underneath a blanket on a twin matress.

For this retreat my committee made survival kits for the programs.  We were able to score towels, wash clothes, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, and bars of soap from a hotel.  We also included, granola bars, juice boxes, water, combs, chap stick, pens and hair ties.  We had lots of extra shampoos from the hotel so we donated the rest of those supplies to the shelter.  We had made 50 survival kits for the outreach program.

The day was really educational.  I really appreciate all the people that work hard and love their job helping these youth and other homeless.  I want to learn more about the lighthouse progam.  I could see myself doing something in that line of work...

Today's experiences helped to put things in perspective for me.  I just hope it sticks.

To learn more about our progams visit http://www.yss.org/ or http://www.iowahomelessyouth.org/.  They should have a list of ways to help if you are interested.

Weekend

This weekend was a nice one.  Chris was home the whole weekend!!  Friday night my mom came to pick up Caleb for the weekend.  When I put Carter to bed it was weird that I didn't have to come out and give Caleb a 30 minute warning or then put him to bed.  I definitely noticed a pang of missing him- I don't know how I am going to do when I am in Hawaii!  eek.

Saturday morning Carter woke up about 5:30 calling our Caleb's name.  :0(  poor kiddo missed his brother...  Later we got up and went for a walk around town, then the 3 of us went to Slater.  I had a haircut appointment and Chris went to the chiro.  We came home, ate lunch quick then rushed off to Marshalltown for our neice and nephew's birthday party. It was at the Y and it was a pool party.  It was pretty fun.  Carter had a blast!  So did I!  They have a really cool water slide that I went down at least half a dozen times!  After the party our other neice and nephew came home with us.  We got supper and ate at the park in Ames.  The kids all played for a little while then we came home and went for a walk while the bigger boys stayed home to watch football.

Sunday I got up early (because Carter woke up early...) and we ate breakfast together while we let Daddy sleep in.  Then we went to my parents house to pick up Caleb.  Chris had softball tornament that afternoon.  Caleb LOVES going to softball!  He has such a good time cheering on the team.  Carter really gets into it too!  I tell him to yell "Go Daddy" and he yells it, but it sounds more like "Oooo, Daddy!"  haha!

Chris had to go back in the field again today (Monday) so he missed another soccer game.  boo.  We have 2 more weeks left, so hopefully he will be able to watch those games.  It should also be done helping the other station with their fields tomorrow, so fingers crossed, he will be home tomorrow for the rest of the week.

Caleb

Caleb had soccer again tonight.  He did really well again.  He score 4 goals!  2 of them were actually in our own goal!!  :0)  Haha!  He does really well getting in there and being "aggressive"  I am very proud of him.

Frustrated!

I am so unbelievably frustrated!!  I took today off so I could go shopping for some much needed clothes and relaxation.  The morning didn't even start out relaxing when my sub for the day called in sick!!  ugh!!  So, I told my supervisor right away and made sure she knew I was NOT going to cut off my day off and come in.  Then she wanted me to locate another sub!!  double Ugh!!  So, while I am trying to enjoy shopping I am having to make phone calls.  Then when work had started and things were figured out my supervisor of all people calls me to find where the lessons were for the day!!  Are you kidding me?!  You are the "boss" you can't figure out what to do with the kids and leave me alone for the day?!  ARGH!

So, unfortunately I am not relaxed this evening and am quite upset and pissed at how my day "OFF" turned out to be.

But, on the bright side I got lots of very nice clothes!  One shirt was actually a size Small!!  :0)  I am excited to wear all my new clothes!  Maurices was my favorite place today!

Another Daddy-less day.

Chris is almost finished with harvest!!  Next Thursday should be there last day in the field!!!  This is a month and a half earlier than the last 2 years!  I am so very happy!  Chris came home lat night, but only to prepare for his hawkeye tailgating experience today.  He was invited by a former co-worker to attend the Hawkeye v. Penn St. game.  So he left before 8:00am this morning to head to Iowa City.  The game didn't start until 7:00pm!!  So, lots of food, drinks and fun for him.

Since Chris was going to be gone all day today I wanted to do something fun with the boys so we chose to visit the zoo.  I ended up buying a membership so we could visit more frequently with less guilt of spending $20-30 every visit.  My mom ended up joining us as a last minute decision.  :0)  After the zoo we went to Culver's for lunch- which I think is Caleb's new favorite restaurant.  (You get ice cream after lunch!- with candies!!)  After lunch we went to the mall - we had to go to JCPenneys!!  I found a couple everyday shirts and a nice shirt, plus another pair of jeans.  Size 8!!  Woot!!  After we left Penney's we took the kids to the play area and mom went to some stores without whiney kids!  We stopped in Ankeny on the way home.  I dropped mom off at Kohl's so she could do some quality shopping and I went grocery shopping quick.

It was pretty uneventful when we got home.  Caleb and Grandma played football while I cooked the kids supper.  I ordered some Casey's pizza for the adults.  :0) yum!  When I went to pick up the pizza there were fire trucks there and smoke billowing.  I thought our pizza was burnt for sure, but thankfully it was just the dumpster that was on fire.  My pizza was safe.  Haha!

After mom left the boys and I had movie night.  Caleb picked out a Go, Diego, Go movie from a redbox.  That is our day in a nutshell.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a nice relaxing family day.  I plan to take all the boys on the walks Carter and I have shared this week.  Hopefully the bigger boys will enjoy it as much as Carter and I did.
